Swim Free

Everybody In the Water!

Do you remember … the exhilarating rush of jumping into the deep end … and the wondrous feeling of peace, strength and flexibility swimming brings? Swimming is a fun, safe way to get fit and keep healthy—when instruction and clean, safe pools and waterways are available to those who seek them. Welcome to Swim Free, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of children and adults through swim. Swim Free will provide the opportunity for everyone to enjoy the rewards of a good swim.

Earl Sandvik, 1943-2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Earl Sandvik, NYC Swim’s lead boat captain. Earl and his boat, the Mi Jo, named for his beloved wife, worked 114 NYC Swim events including 26 Manhattan circumnavigations. Earl will be sorely missed by all within the NYC Swim and Swim Free communities.

Per Earl's request, there will be no ceremony, but we are hoping to flood the family with notes of love and stories of Earl. Please send a note to the Sandvik family at 282 Shaler Blvd, Ridgefield, NJ 07657. Earl believed in Swim Free's mission with all of his heart and soul, and thus the family has asked that If you wish to make a charitable donation in his memory, you can do so by clicking the "donate" button on this page.

SWIM FREE IN THE NEWS

Swim Free has selected the Plainfield Area YMCA, Children's Village/Harlem Polo Center, and NYC Parks as recipient of funds to support learn to swim programs.  As a result, over 100 kids will be placed in programs that will teach them the skills they need to swim.  In addition, these organizations will receive swimsuits and goggles, courtesy of Dolfin Swimwear.  The children (many of whom have no swim gear) will now have professional suits to wear during their lessons.  This will be a great addition to the 1,200 swimsuits donated to NYC children participating in Asphalt Green's Waterproofing Program.

Swim Free has collaborated with the Jewish Community Center Manhattan place adults without the resources or access within the JCC's adult learn-to-swim program.  The first course was a great success and the second is underway.

Swim Free recently launched its Swim Free Angel™ program, an initiative that helps comfort people, young and old, who are anxious in and around the water.  The Angels provide support shore-side and in the water, offering encouragement and coping mechanisms to help people overcome their fears.  The Angels have participated at NYC Swim events,  the Westchester Triathlon, and the Nautica NYC Triathlon.  To become a Swim Free Angel, please fill out at Swim Free contact form.

Swim Free was mentioned in the Wall Street Journal 6/12 article about the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim.  Congratulations to all the marathon swimmers!

The 5 Borough Bike Tour, Swim Free's first event, was an enormous success, with the Bike NY entries selling out immediately. Thank you to those of you who participated! We hope you had a great time.
